The pediatric assessment triangle (PAT) is a patient assessment tool for EMTs & paramedics when evaluating sick or injured children. Comprising three key components—appearance, work of breathing, and circulation to skin.
The PAT provides a rapid snapshot of a child's condition. It emphasizes the importance of visual assessment, enabling paramedics to quickly identify critical issues and prioritize interventions accordingly. For instance, subtle signs of distress such retractions or abnormal positioning can be picked up faster by the EMS provider.
By utilizing PAT, EMTs & paramedics can promptly recognize respiratory distress, shock, or hypoperfusion, initiating quick interventions to stabilize the child's condition en route to the ER. Given the unique physiological and psychological considerations in pediatric patients, utilizing the PAT ensures a systematic approach to your assessment.
