Sometimes, life really sucks. That’s all there is to it and as you’re sitting alone in your room, fingers tapping away against the keys of your laptop, the sound almost matching the steady rain tapping against your window, you can’t help but feel as if this is indeed one of those times. You hadn’t meant to snap at your boyfriend you really shouldn’t have, considering all he’s been through as of late, but unfortunately, it happened, and now, here you are. Guilty, but equally annoyed and heartbroken at Peter Parker’s inconsistent and uncertain attitude, along with his actions towards your relationship. But in all honesty, you find yourself missing his presence and those warm brown eyes of his. With a shake of your head, you tear yourself from your thoughts and continue your work, only to nearly jump out of your skin when an all too familiar knock against the windowpane startles you, your laptop nearly paying the price for the surprise. Your head swivels automatically toward the source of the noise and to your shock, a waterlogged looking Peter is crouching on the fire escape, his disheveled state clearly being ignored as he somehow forces his usual adorable smile. Scrambling to your feet, you hastily make your way towards the window, sliding it open and ushering your boyfriend in and out of the rain. “How on Earth did you manage to get up here, Peter?” You breathe, still working on overcoming your earlier shock. “Fire escape,” He states nonchalantly, another grin surfacing as he sheds his jacket, hanging it carefully on the back of your reading chair. “Your doorman is intimidating.” “Doorman?” You muse aloud, confusion pricking your thoughts. “We don’t even have a doorman… It’s twenty stories!” “Yeah. It’s alright.” Still standing in surprise, you watch as Peter unzips his drenched backpack, pulling out a crumpled and broken bouquet of flowers. “Oh hey, uh… I got your Mom, uh these.” You can’t help but chuckle while Peter just sighs in frustration, hiding his face with the broken flowers. “They were… They were nice.” “They look like they were, yeah,” You agree, a breathy laugh filling the silence between you both. “I’m gonna keep these.” However, the silence soon returns, the lighthearted mood in the room vanishing almost as if it had never come and you find yourself sighing heavily, taking a seat on the edge of your bed, Peter following suit, the added weight making the frame creak softly. “So why show up now, of all times, Pete?” You muse aloud, breaking the tense void of silence. “It’s almost midnight, you know.” The person at your side frowns slightly before turning to face you, sincerity in his gaze. “I just wanted to come and… I wanted to come and see… check and see how you were doing. ” Now it’s your turn to frown, his words pulling on your heart slightly as you urge the tears in your eyes not to spring free. “I think we both know the answer to that question,” You mumble, voice wavering. “I’m obviously fine.” You watch in your peripheral vision as Peter just shakes his head, a sorrow now added to his gaze which follows his hand, reaching once more into his backpack and removing a waterlogged, handwritten card, the ink running down the paper. Handing it to you wordlessly, he shifts closer toward your side, waiting for a reaction. And as you read the words on the page, the tears you’d been holding at bay begin to well. “I'll tell you what it says. Says, "I love you." Because I love you. And no offense, but you're wrong.” “About what?” You murmur, becoming caught up in his gaze. Though you know what you were wrong about. You were wrong about the two of you together. “You're wrong about us being on different paths. We're not on different paths. You're my path. And you're always gonna be my path. And I know there's a million reasons why we shouldn't be together. I know that. But I'm tired of them. I'm tired of every single one of them.” And before you can even react, you’re tackled in an embrace so tight that it nearly knocks the wind out of you. But you don’t mind you’ve missed this. Sharing a soft kiss you both break apart slightly as you lay there, staring at the ceiling and listening to the steady rain and thunder, all mixed in with the hum of New York traffic. Your eyes are beginning to grow heavier by the minute, the vast range of emotions you’d been subjected to over the past few moments finally sinking in. But before you succumb to sleep entirely, you shift closer into Peter’s frame, feeling safe and at ease. And that feeling doesn’t vanish, even as the night wears on. Life may suck sometimes, but hey, maybe you have to have it worse before it gets better and if that’s the case, this was certainly worth it.
