A Way to Explore New Artistic Territory

Ian Roberts

Based on your comments on my last video, this month I demonstrate my Master Copy of the Ukrainian painter Fyodor Zakharov. At the end of this video, I give three tips on how to do a Master Copy yourself.

Why do a Master Copy? Well, it is a timehonored practice that goes back hundreds of years. I mean, Rubens copied Velasquez when he was in Spain so that tells you something. It's not about becoming or trying to become someone else. It's about exploring a new direction... Perhaps something that pulls you or appeals to you. Looking at someone who's been there ahead of you, and could help guide you by looking at the way they've done it. So in this way, we can do a master copy and we could decide if we want to explore one direction more, acknowledge we need to understand something more, or realize that we want to leave it altogether. It is about embedding yourself in the practice.
