॥ আড় মাছের কুট্টি ভাজা ॥

সেবার গ্রীষ্ম বড় প্রখর। ময়মনসিংহ যেন দাবদাহে জ্বলছে। শেষ গ্রীষ্মে কাঁঠাল পেকে গন্ধে চতুর্দিক আমোদিত। কয়েকটি খাওয়া হয়েছে, কয়েকটি এখনো গাছে। তবে অভাবের সংসারে মেয়েটি জেনে গেছে যে ফেলানি কিছুই নেই। পরম যত্নে তাই সে কাঁঠালের দানাগুলি রোদে শুকিয়ে রেখেছে। স্নান করে নরম আটপৌরে কাপড়টি পরে আরশির সামনে চুল আঁচড়াতে আঁচড়াতে সে ভাবে আজ দুপুরে কাঁঠালদানার চচ্চড়ি করবে দুটি। মন খারাপ হয়, অমন জোয়ান স্বামীটির সারাদিন কাটে নদী খালে বিলে মাছ ধরে, মাথার ঘাম পায়ে ফেলে, তাকে এমন একপদে সে ভাতের থালা বেড়ে দেয় কি ভাবে? চোখের কোণে টলটল করে জল। এমন সময় দাওয়া থেকে হাঁক আসে। সে তড়িঘড়ি বার হয়ে দেখে ইয়া বড় এক আড় মাছ হাতে দাঁড়ানো মানুষটির গা ঘামে ভিজে, তবু মুখে একগাল হাসি। বলে “বউ, দ্যাখ দ্যাখ মাছটা! বিলে ধরেছি এক্ষুণি। এ মাছ বেচবো না। কেটেকুটে রান্না কর তো! কতকাল পেট ভরে মাছভাত খাইনা।”

মেয়ে সে কথা শুনে আঁচল তুলে নেয় চোখের কোণে। বোঝে না এ কান্না আনন্দে, ভালোবাসায় না দুঃখে। শুধু এক অদ্ভুত আরামে ভরে ওঠে তার মন। মন চায় ছুটে যায়, কত না সোহাগের কথা বলে মানুষটিকে। কিন্তু তেমন কথা সে জানে কই? ধীর পায়ে এগিয়ে গিয়ে মাছের দড়িতে হাত ছুঁয়ে শুধু বলে “দাও। নেয়ে এসো গে যাও।” আঁশবটি পেতে বসে। আজ সে কাঁঠালদানা দিয়ে রাঁধবে তার মায়ের কাছে শেখা আড় মাছের কুট্টি ভাজা। আজ যে তার বড় পার্বণ! কতকাল বাদে মানুষটার মুখে এমন হাসি দেখেছে সে…।

॥ Aar Machher Kutti Bhaja ॥

Summer was unusually severe that year. Mymensingh was burning in the heat. The jackfruits have all ripened towards the end of the season. Some have been eaten, some still hang from the tree. But in all her poverty she knows that she cannot afford to go anything awaste. Hence with care she has dried the jackfruit seeds in the sun. After a bath, she wore her soft saree, and while combing her hair in front of the mirror, she was thinking of cooking a dry curry with those seeds. It feels miserable when she wonders how on earth she can serve her young hardworking husband with such a meagre meal, when he toils the whole day catching fish in the rivers and rivulets. Tears well up. And then suddenly she hears the cry from outside. She rushes out to see that he is standing there, dripping with sweat but wearing a large smile, holding a huge catfish in his hand. He says “Dear, see this! It is a fresh catch from the river! I will not sell it. Cook it for us. It has been Shen since we have had a hearty meal of rice and fish!”

She picks up the edge of her saree and covers her eyes. It is so hard to understand these tears are they from happiness, love or sorrow? Just a beautifully soothing feeling fills her heart. She feels like running up to him, whispering sweet nothings in his ears. But who would teach her those words? Instead, she walks up to him slowly, touches the cord tying the fish, and says “Give it. You have a quick bath and come back.” She picks up the knife. Today she will cook AAR MACHHER KUTTI BHAJA (Catfish Curry with Jackfruit Seeds) taught by her mother. Today is such a day of celebration for her! After so many days she has seen him smiling like this…
