Abishag, the Shunammite, was a young woman who lived during the latter part of David's reign in Jerusalem. According to the Bible, Abishag was the most beautiful young woman in the entire kingdom. For many scholars, the name Abishag means "my father is a wanderer".

The biblical text records that King David was very old and could not keep himself warm. In this context, a young virgin was chosen to warm the king, and this young woman was Abishag, the Shunammite. Thus, Abishag took care of David in his old age, but the Israeli king did not have relations with her. However, most scholars believe that Abishag officially belonged to David's group of women. This is because, after David's death, King Solomon interpreted Adonijah's request to marry Abishag as a threat to the throne.
