http://www.footankle.com/accessorybo... An accessory navicular is an extra bone that is found on the inside of the foot off of the navicular bone. It is contained within the posterior tibial tendon as it inserts into the foot. This is sometimes also called os tibiale externum or os navicularis. In some people the accessory navicular creates a bump or lump on the inside of the arch that can be irritated by shoe pressure. When treating accessory navicular bones our goal is to stop the foot from pronating in order to reduce pressure from the shoe on the extra foot bone. In addition we want to reduce tension on the posterior tibial tendon. This is usually accomplished with the use of foot orthotics that support the foot and reduce pressure on the accessory navicular.
