From needlesticks to the transmission of bloodborne disease, acupuncturists should be vigilant against risks to health and safety at all times.

Conducting a risk assessment of your practice will highlight specific areas.

Common Health and Safety Risks in Acupuncture

Infection transmission through direct physical contact or indirect physical contact; infection transmission through airborne droplets or aerosols; accidental needlesticks; transmission of bloodborne disease.

Health and Safety Guidance

Keep the workplace clean and tidy at all times. Adopts a cleaning/sterilising protocol between clients.

Ensure treatment areas on the body are clean, sterilised, and intact.

Dress appropriately and refrain from wearing jewellery during practice.

Do not treat clients if you feel unwell and report any suspected notifiable infectious disease to your GP.

The Field Area

Establish a field area to lay out tools and cleaning supplies. The field area should be easy to clean and disinfect.

Use the field area for packets of needles, clean cotton wool, sterile alcohol swabs, and anything else you will need to use.

Never put waste, sharps bins, or waste disposal bags in the field area.

Do not lay used needles on any surfaces, dispose of them immediately into a sharps bin.
