Proposal for additional quantum of Pension after completion of 65,70 & 75 years of age – Rejected summarily
• The Parliament Standing Committee in its 110th report recommended during February 2022 to consider the demand of additional pension at the rate of 5%, 10% and 15% to the pensioners attaining the age of 65,70 & 75 years respectively.
• On 8.12.2022, action taken report was tabled in the Rajya Sabha under report No 120
• Information collected about the age group of pensioners to work out the additional quantum of pension in all the departments like railways, postal, defence etc.
• Proposal was sent to DOE about the financial implications. DOE questioned that DOP&PW has not stated as to how the additional financial implications would be met.
• DOE observed that due to Old Pension scheme the liabilities are not only large (2.7 lakhs crores during 20222023) but increasing year after year.
• Further increase is not desirable and will put in to significance pressure on the Govt finances.
• It will have a cascading effect on the state of Finance and similar demand will arise from the retired State Govt employees.
• DOE not agreed the proposal and rejected.
• The Parliament Committee takes note of the reply and do not wish to pursue this matter further.
• Thereafter SCOVA meeting was held to discuss about the pensioners issues on 22.2.2024.
• The Department of Pension & PW released the 33rd SCOVA Meeting held on 22.2.2024 on 3.4.2024.
• Enhancement of additional pension to the pensioners after every 5 years ie. 65,70 &75 years of age before 80 years was discussed.
• The Govt rejected the demand and the minutes stated that the proposal has huge pension liabilities due to old pension scheme.
• It will have cascading effects on the Govt finances since the same demand will be raised by the State govt employees.
• Due to financial constraints the proposal has not been agreed to.
• Unless there is a political decision this is not possible at this juncture.
