The adductor pollicis muscle is one of the four (some sources only count three and don't count this one) thenar muscles of the hand located on the radial side of the palm. Together they form the thenar eminence.

The thenar musculature consists of the:
abductor pollicis brevis
flexor pollicis brevis
opponens pollicis
adductor pollicis (not always counted)

They originate at different carpal bones and distally attach to the thumb. The adductor pollicis has a transverse head and an oblique head. The transverse head originates from the third metacarpal bone, whereas the oblique head has its origin on the capitate bone and second and third metacarpals. Together they insert on the base of the proximal phalanx of the thumb and the dorsal aponeurosis.

The adductor pollicis is innervated by the deep branch of the ulnar nerve and is mainly responsible for thumb adduction and also contributes to the opposition of the thumb.

In this tutorial we will take a look at the most important anatomy facts of this muscle:

0:10 thenar muscles
0:45 adductor pollicis origin and insertion
1:05 innervation by the ulnar nerve
1:29 adductor pollicis action
