Advanced Concepts #1: Expressing Power For Its Own Sake

Typically when we think of explosive work we think of things like power cleans, and loaded jumps, and all these power movements that we can load incrementally and track progression on and all that stuff. And that's very important, especially earlier on in the training career. To make improvements in explosiveness you need to move progressively heavier objects faster.

But at some point there starts to become value in the act of simply BEING EXPLOSIVE. Not necessarily with the intent to improve upon that particular exercise even, but the value is found in the act itself. The effect that it has on the body in that very moment in time rather than just the effect it may have moving forward.

With that, I've started doing a lot of different types of explosive exercise in recent history. Sometimes even something that I just came up with in the moment, and I end up with a variety of different movements, sometime loaded, sometimes unloaded, and sometimes even assisted. So the goal is to cover all these different points along the forcevelocity curve and build a comprehensive power profile.

But not all these exercises can be tracked or progressed upon in any reliable way. But that doesn't mean they don't confer value for the future! They absolutely do because once you are at a certain threshold that simply covering all the bases and being as EXPLOSIVE AS POSSIBLE is the best way to continue to improve that generalized aspect of comprehensive power.
