Advancing with Watercolor: Color Stratagies “Twilight”

Follow
Gary Tucker

This is a video done as a supplement to a watercolor class taught by Gary Tucker in Boston. This video was made to demonstrate how an artist might work with color to create a more pronounced center of interest. To find a center of interest is perhaps the first step to organizing the content. I have used the small house on the horizon as a center of interest and used the complimentary hues of blue against orange to generate a more striking sense of light in the motif. Additional in the sky and foreground warm was juxtaposed over cool and visa versa to create a glow in the painting.
This painting utilizes and underpainting of yellow ochre and cobalt blue. The darker washes are created by various mixtures of Burnt sienna and cobalt blue. I hope this exercise is helpful in simplifying the process of composition with color and illuminating as to how we generate glow through transparancy
