In the late 70's, the creation of the Akwesasne Freedom School became a major component for the language revitalization movement in the Akwesasne Mohawk community. A strong traditional apparoach and unique curriculum would produce future generations of Kanien'kehá:ka speakers. Parents, elders, and volunteers operate the Freedom School by a consensus decisionmaking process with community support primarily from annual quilt sales and potluck dinners, grants and donations from friends far and near.
