Description: Departing Salt Lake on a hot and sunny summer evening, in lovely golden hour lighting. This was going to be my first 737 MAX flight, but the aircraft type was swapped from a MAX 9 to a 900ER on the day of departure. The views out the window that night were so great, though, that I got over my disappointment pretty quick.

Alaska currently has just one gate at SLC, which became very apparent that night. The aircraft scheduled at our gate before ours was delayed by a storm that came through the area earlier that afternoon, which delayed our plane’s arrival at the gate by about 20 minutes. We left the gate 17 minutes late, and after pushing back and starting up the engines, we taxied forward a bit, then stopped for about five minutes. The taxiway in front of us was blocked by a plane that was trying to taxi in to our gate, so we had to wait until the taxiway next to us was free before we could cross over to the other side and finally make our way to the runway. After a speedy taxi up to the north end of the airfield, we took off from Runway 16R, making a big climbing right turn to head northwest as soon as we were airborne. As we climbed out, we got some really great views of the Great Salt Lake, then got settled in for our short flight up to Seattle.
