Spring is a great time to see wildlife on the Alcan Highway. Remember that animals are active this time of year, and be prepared to encounter road construction.

When we made this trip in May of 2021, the permafrost had collapsed the road in several places over the winter, and only some of those sinkholes were marked. Road crews can take a while to make remote repairs, so plan to take your time and drive more slowly than you might otherwise.

The weather can also vary widely in the spring. While there are many camping options this early in the year, be prepared for all types of weather. Hauling our Bigfoot B25RQ trailer (which we currently live in fulltime, even in Alaskan winters) meant we could stay warm and dry anywhere.
