Unknown Alentejo, towns and villages with charm. This week we are going to visit Alegrete. Alegrete is a beautiful village in the municipality of Portalegre, with a medieval castle from the time of the Christian reconquest, and a very interesting historic centre. It is only 13km from Portalegre, but when it is diverted from the Portalegre Elvas road, it has little visibility. It is located at one of the entrances to the Serra de S.Mamede Natural Park, a park that includes Castelo de Vide and Marvão.
As it is a frontier village, it was decimated by successive battles, and despite several reconstructions, its castle is in ruins, which does not take away from the charm of this village.
Alegrete was formally incorporated into Portuguese territory in 1267, after the Treaty of Badajoz, signed between D. Afonso III and his fatherinlaw D. Afonso X of Castile. in the century XIV
We leave the Castle through Porta da Vila and go through the oldest street in the village, Rua Direita, which joins the castle to the Igreja Matriz and Torre do Relógio, which were inside the urban fence next to Porta do Forno and Vila
