Alexander Soros: Heine Wagner Nietzsche

Follow
IWMVienna

This event was recorded on 4 December 2015 at the IWM Library.

From within a broader investigation of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s relation to the poet Heinrich Heine, Alexander Soros focuses on Nietzsche’s break with the composer Richard Wagner, specifically in relation to Heine. Central here are Wagner’s debt to Heine and condemnation of Judaism as the “evil conscience of modern civilization.” A reconsideration of these fraught relations involves recent finelygrained readings of Wagner’s antisemitism, Nietzsche’s (anti)antisemitism, and Heine’s Jewishness.

Alexander Soros is the founder of the Alexander Soros Foundation, Global Board Member of the Open Society Foundations and Advisory Board Member of Global Witness.
At the time of the event, he was guest at the IWM.

Opening remarks by Shalini Randeria, IWM Rector.
