Chaabi style , which has evolved over the course of the 20th century into secular singing, has its origins in religious singing. The classical Algerian singing had given birth to the genre of medh, which, based on popular poetry, attracted a large audience because it was more accessible. This accessibility was due to the lack of knowledge of classical Arabic language among Algerians during the colonial period, following the widespread destruction of Quranic schools.
