Reef Shark The grey reef shark is a species of requiem shark, in the family Carcharhinidae. One of the most common reef sharks in the IndoPacific, it is found as far east as Easter Island and as far west as South Africa. This species is most often seen in shallow water near the dropoffs of coral reefs. The Caribbean reef shark is a species of requiem shark, belonging to the family Carcharhinidae. It is found in the tropical waters of the western Atlantic Ocean from Florida to Brazil, and is the most commonly encountered reef shark in the Caribbean Sea. The blacktip reef shark is a species of requiem shark, in the family Carcharhinidae, which can be easily identified by the prominent black tips on its fins. Among the most abundant sharks inhabiting the tropical coral reefs of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, this species prefers shallow, inshore waters. Mako Shark The shortfin mako, also known as the shortfin mako shark, blue pointer, or bonito shark, is a large mackerel shark. It is commonly referred to as the mako shark, as is the longfin mako shark. The shortfin mako can reach a size of 4 m in length and weigh 570 kg. The species is classified as Endangered by the IUCN. Hammerhead Shark The hammerhead sharks are a group of sharks that form the family Sphyrnidae, commonly referred to as ‘hammerheads’ for the unusual and distinctive form of their heads, which are flattened and laterally extended into a "hammer" shape called a cephalofoil. Tiger Shark The tiger shark is a species of ground shark, and the only extant member of the genus Galeocerdo and family Galeocerdonidae. It is a large macropredator, with females being capable of attaining a length of over 5 m. Populations are found in many tropical and temperate waters, especially around central Pacific islands. Great White Shark The great white shark, also known as the white shark, white pointer, or simply great white, is a species of large mackerel shark which can be found in the coastal surface waters of all the major oceans. It is the only known surviving species of its genus Carcharodon. Disclaimer Copyright Disclaimer under section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for “fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, education and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Megalodon Megalodon, meaning "big tooth", is an extinct species of mackerel shark that lived approximately 23 to 3.6 million years ago, from the Early Miocene to the Pliocene epochs. It was formerly thought to be a member of the family Lamnidae and a close relative of the great white shark. Dunkleosteus Dunkleosteus is an extinct genus of large arthrodire fish that existed during the Late Devonian period, about 382–358 million years ago. It was a pelagic fish inhabiting open waters, and one of the first apex predators of any ecosystem. Mosasaurus Mosasaurus is the type genus of the mosasaurs, an extinct group of aquatic squamate reptiles. It lived from about 82 to 66 million years ago during the Campanian and Maastrichtian stages of the Late Cretaceous. Frilled Shark The frilled shark and the southern African frilled shark are the two extant species of shark in the family Chlamydoselachidae.
