During the Restoration War, Almeida was considered the most important place of arms for the defense of Beira. It was built simultaneously with the Valença do Minho fortress and the Elvas and Estremoz fortresses. Seen from the air it looks like a 12pointed star, with several lines, ditches, revelins and bastions. It had the capacity to quarter a garrison of 3000 men and came to have 300 pieces of artillery. Its history is therefore a military history, which begins in the 17th century and ends in the 19th century. Praça Forte de Almeida is a candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage category.
