Built from 1961 to 1985, the Alouette III (which is French for “Skylark”) served Flight for Life for 20 years. It first attracted the attention of Flight For Life founders during the 1968 Winter Olympics when the Alouette was used as an ambulance high in the French Alps. It had a relatively roomy cabin, carrying up to 5 people with medical equipment, and it had great performance in hot weather at high altitude... perfect for the Rocky Mountains.

The Alouette at Wings Over the Rockies was originally used by the Irish Air Corps. A flight nurse for Flight For Life spearheaded the effort to obtain the wornout airframe and restore it to represent one of the original Flight For Life helicopters.
