The former mainstay of the great fleets of American Airlines and United Airlines, the Douglas DC10 and later renamed the McDonnell Douglas 10!!!
Once two great domestic giants .. and NOW two of America's Largest airlines. But they both got there with help of the second American Jumbo Jet coming online after the Boeing 747 (which both carriers also ordered and placed into service. Both Carriers also suffered horrific accidents with the DC10. American first in Chicago O'Hare and United years later in Sioux City, Iowa.
The great DC10 was the predecessor to larger McDonnell Douglas MD11 trijet... and of the two, only American went on to employ it. Nevertheless, it's great to look back and remember the stellar onboard service of these intriguing jetliners.
