American McGee's Alice is a thirdperson action video game for the computer released on December 6, 2000, which takes place in the Alice in Wonderland universe. It was developed by Rogue Entertainment, designed by American McGee, and published by Electronic Arts. His musical band was composed by Chris Vrenna.

This game was based on the 3D engine from Quake III Arena. A version for PlayStation 2 was in development but was canceled.

The design of the game's box was altered after its departure reportedly due to complaints received by Electronic Arts from various consumer groups, although McGee has maintained that such alteration was due to internal concerns of Electronic Arts, and had no external relations.

The original box design showed Alice holding a knife. Instead, the altered version shows Alice holding an ice wand, and the anatomy of the Cheshire Cat's skeleton is toned down. A third version showed Alicia holding cards in her hands.

The game stars a much more cynical and macabre Alice.

Shortly after the events of the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass occurred, Alice's house is consumed by a mysterious fire, which kills her family, leaving her the sole survivor.

Due to this, Alice is deeply traumatized and depressed and attempts suicide (bandages can be seen covering her wrists), and becomes catatonic. She is admitted to the Rutledge psychiatric hospital, where she is considered crazy and is constantly mistreated by the workers.

Ten years after the incident, Alice is summoned by the White Rabbit to save them from the despotic rule of the Queen of Hearts, in a totally altered Wonderland. Now it has become a completely twisted version of it.
