American Trans Air (ATA) was a combined scheduled service and charter air carrier that operated out of Indianapolis (HQ) from 1973 to 2008. A unique product ATA started as a local Indianapolis Travel Club called Ambassadair, and over the years grew to the largest charter carrier in the us, and the 8th largest airline in the us (scheduled). Combining the passengers carried annually, (50/50 charter/scheduled) and ATA achieved Major Carrier Status, as outlined by the FAA. While the airline went into the scheduled service market in 1984; it remained the workhorse of the Charter industry... especially the Department of Defense (DOD).
