One night, Susan Lloyd experienced terrible pain in her mouth and later saw her primary care physician, who prescribed an overthecounter pain reliever. When the pain persisted, she knew it was more serious but had no idea it would be diagnosed as stagefour cancer. She was referred to Rui Fernandes, MD, DMD, at UF Health Jacksonville, who removed the cancer and reconstructed her jaw using a bone graft from her leg.
