Antipsychotics Learn with Visual Mnemonics

Studying pharmacology is tough. We make it easier by taking difficult drug names, like haloperidol, which sounds similar to Halo pear how to make a comical character to help you ace that test.

Today we will be going over different antipsychotics and examples in each class. This spooky scene takes place at a graveyard where there are ghosts, visitors visiting loved ones, and bad guys who want to send people to their graves.

Antipsychotics are class of drug that are used in psychosis, mood stabilization, and acute behavioural disturbances. They are usually given orally but some of the antipsychotics can be given by intramuscular injections.

Fast acting injections are often used in acute behavioural disturbances. Slow acting injections otherwise known as depot injections are often used in chronic conditions such as schizophrenia.

Antipsychotics are split up into first and second generation classes.

Although there are couple exceptions, most antipsychotics block dopamine receptors in the brain leading to decreased dopaminergic neurotransmission.

First generation antipsychotics otherwise known as typical antipsychotics tend to cause more extrapyramidal side effects (EPSEs) than second generation antipsychotics. Extrapyramidal side effects include acute dystonia, akathisia, akinesia, and tardive dyskinesia.

The drugs that we we look at in this video are:
Chlorpromazine
Haloperidol
Fluphenazine
Clozapine
Asenapine
Quetiapine
Olanzapine
Lurasidone
Ziprasidone
Risperidone
Aripiprazole
Paliperidone
Sulpiride
Amisulpride

Clozapine is the first secondgeneration antipsychotic introduced into the market. Although considered the most effective antipsychotic it is not first line due to small chance of dangerous sideeffects such as agranulocytosis and cardiac toxicity.

Aripiprazole is a partial agonist at the dopamine D2 receptors. It can disrupt areas of the brain where dopamine acts strongly on these receptors leading to decreased response.
