Following accusations by the NATO Secretary General that China supported Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, China has criticized the defense alliance for "slander and attacks." This year's NATO summit begins in Washington on Tuesday evening, to which the heads of government of Australia, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea have also been invited. Stoltenberg said in a press conference before the summit that the inclusion of these countries shows "that our security is not regional" but "global". "And that is clearly evident in the war in Ukraine, where Iran, North Korea and China are supporting and enabling Russia's illegal war of aggression," Stoltenberg said on Monday, according to a NATO transcript.

At the start of the summit, US President Joe Biden invited the allies to a ceremony to mark the 75th anniversary of the alliance. In addition to Chancellor Scholz and the new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also expected in Washington. At the summit, which will last until Thursday, further military aid pledges for Kyiv in the Russian war of aggression are planned. However, the invitation to join desired by Zelensky will not be made.
