In this video, I would like to talk about Applying for a New Study Permit in Canada. Many international graduates in Canada, after completing an undergraduate degree or college program, often choose to pursue further education. This can involve obtaining a second degree or diploma in a different field, or advancing their education with a graduate degree in their area of study. For these students, it’s necessary to apply for a new study permit. This article will guide you through the process, highlight recent changes, and provide essential tips for a successful application. Understanding the Study Permit A study permit is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. It’s important to note that a study permit is not a visa; it doesn’t allow you to enter Canada. You may also need a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA). Reasons for Applying for a New Study Permit
International students might need a new study permit if they: Complete a program and wish to start a new one: After finishing an undergraduate degree or college diploma, some students opt to pursue another program in a different field. Advance to a higher level of study: Students who complete an undergraduate program may wish to pursue a master’s or doctoral degree. Need more time to complete their current program: If your current study permit is expiring and you require more time to finish your program, you will need to apply for an extension. Recent Changes in Study Permit Regulations As of January 2024, there have been significant updates to the requirements and processes for obtaining a study permit:
Increased Cost of Living Requirement: The minimum amount of funds required to prove financial stability has increased from $10,000 to $20,635 for a single student. This ensures that students have sufficient funds to cover living expenses while studying in Canada. Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL): For students wishing to pursue a second undergraduate degree or college diploma, obtaining a PAL is now mandatory. This letter is issued by the provincial government and confirms that the program of study meets provincial standards. Exemptions for Graduate Students: Master’s and other graduatelevel students are exempt from needing a PAL. Additionally, they may be eligible for a threeyear PostGraduation Work Permit (PGWP) upon completion of their program, even if the program duration is less than two years. Steps to Apply for a New Study Permit Choose Your Program and Institution: Select a designated learning institution (DLI) and program that aligns with your career goals and interests. Gather Required Documents: Acceptance letter from a DLI.
Proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition, living expenses, and return transportation. Valid passport or travel document. Recent passportsized photos. Provincial Attestation Letter (for second undergraduate degree or college program applicants). Any additional documents requested by the visa office. Complete the Application: Fill out the study permit application form available on the IRCC website. Pay the application fee. Include a letter of explanation, if necessary, to clarify your reasons for wanting to study in Canada and how the program aligns with your goals. Submit Biometrics: If required, provide your fingerprints and photo at a designated biometrics collection center. Attend an Interview: In some cases, you may be required to attend an interview at a Canadian consulate or embassy. Medical Examination
