The McCurdy's department store was a towering presence for shoppers in downtown Rochester for decades. The flagship Midtown store was joined by several other locations across the area. The company was sold in 1994, with some of the stores taken over by The BonTon. The closure of the Midtown store signified a major blow to retail shopping in downtown Rochester.
