In this tutorial I will show you how to control 2wire, 3wire, and 4wire CPU fans using an Arduino. With 2wire fans and 3wire fans, speed control is possible using an Nchannel MOSFET and PWM. With 3wire fans and 4wire fans, it is possible to measure the fan speed using an Arduino input and a pullup resistor. With 4wire fans, speed control is possible directly with a PWM Arduino channel without the use of a transistor or MOSFET.
