Ministry of Justice

Going to court can seem very daunting, especially if it’s your first time. Listen to our advice on what to do when you first arrive at court for a county court hearing, and how to find out where your case will be heard.

If you have legal representation, they will be able to guide you through the process and show you exactly where and when your case is scheduled to be heard. However, it can make you feel more comfortable knowing what’s going to happen yourself which is where this video can help.

County courts deal with civil cases, including most cases about debt. Often the court deals with County Court Judgments (CCJs) by post, with no court hearing. However, there will be cases where hearings are involved. Remember that at any point, you and the other party can negotiate and try to come to an agreement.

County courts are not there to decide whether someone is “innocent” or “guilty” and there are no juries. These courts do not issue fines and do not imprison anyone for debt.

However, If you get a judgment, do not ignore it you could be taken back to court and forced to pay.
