In the world of art, it can be difficult to promote something on the premise of it not being enjoyable. Products that aren't designed from the ground up to trigger frequent doses of dopamine into your system are often seen as pointless, boring, or even a waste of money whether that's artwork, a movie, or indeed a video game.

Pretty much since their inception, video games more than any other form of art have been saddled with the expectation of being fun. That above all else, whether that's graphics, audio or design, they need to be mechanically entertaining to play. However, as the medium has grown, and developers have gradually broadened the scope of possibilities with the technology available, I think we have to have an honest discussion about whether video games HAVE to be fun? Can games that aren't designed to be fun stand among the greats? How can the medium grow as an artform without the mandate of fun? Why is it that games that aren't traditionally fun are rejected immediately by some, and is it even still worthwhile calling video games "video games"?
