Guyana brings together an incredible mosaic of peoples. Creoles, Bushinengué, Chinese, Brazilians, Surinamese, Europeans and Haitians have lived there for centuries but, as archaeological sources attest, the first inhabitants of this territory of 83,845 km2 were the Amerindians, who had settled there about five centuries before Our era. Formerly nomadic, most of them have settled down. Today, there are five Amerindian villages northwest of Cayenne, such as Bellevue, in the municipality of Iracoubo, where the inhabitants fight for their rights and their traditions. At their head, Cécile Kouyouri, a descendant of the Kali'na people and the first female customary chief.
