Tarikh Episode 635

In this episode Nikhil talks about Sarmad Kashani, commonly known as Sarmad, was a prominent 17thcentury mystic and poet with a fascinating life journey. Born around 1590 in Armenia to a family of Jewish Persianspeaking Armenian merchants, Sarmad developed an excellent command of Persian, crucial for his work as a merchant. He even translated the Torah into Persian.
Sarmad's travels led him to the Mughal Empire, where he initially engaged in trade. However, his encounter with a Hindu disciple named Abhay Chand marked a transformative phase. Some speculate that Abhay Chand may have converted to Islam or Judaism under Sarmad's influence.
Abandoning his material wealth, Sarmad adopted a mystic lifestyle, growing his hair and wandering the streets. His reputation reached the Mughal crown prince, Dara Shikoh, who became his disciple. After the War of Succession, Aurangzeb emerged victorious, leading to Sarmad's arrest and trial for heresy. Despite being given an opportunity to recite the Islamic declaration of faith, Sarmad defiantly stuck to his mystical beliefs. Consequently, he was beheaded in 1661.
