Australia's Snake-Necked Turtle in the Wild!

The SnakeNecked Turtle ( Chelodina longicollis ) is a widespread species of freshwater turtle (terrapin) in Australia. They inhabit ponds and slow moving streams where they use their long necks up to 30cm long to spring out and snatch prey such as fish or shrimp. The length of the neck is about half as long as the carapace (otherwise known as the shell). This species often inhabits areas that get little rainfall, in times of severe drought the longnecked turtle will estivate / become dormant until the weather gets better. They have sharp strong claws which they use to dig where they will lay eggs underground in holes.
