Jazz is a musical genre that originated in the African diaspora in the United States in the late 1st and early 20th centuries. Jazz emerged as a phenomenon in many parts of the United States with the independent music style popular at the time; linked by a shared connection between AfricanAmerican music and EuropeanAmerican music with a tendency toward performance.
Jazz has a history spanning over 100 years, from ragtime to the present day, and it is difficult to define perfectly. Jazz often improvises, using swing notes, syncopation, and polyrhythm as well as aspects of American popular music, European harmonies, and African musical elements such as ragtime and blue.
