The axillary artery is a large muscular vessel that travels through the axilla. It is responsible for carrying oxygenrich blood to the upper limb, as well as to parts of the musculocutaneous system of the scapula and upper lateral thorax. The axillary artery is the direct continuation of the subclavian artery and becomes the brachial artery in its further course. It courses behind the pectoralis major muscle and lies in close proximity to the axillary vein and the medial cord of the brachial plexus.

The axillary artery has three parts. A help for memorizing them is the fact, that the number of branches in each part match the name of the part itself.

First part: superior thoracic artery
Second part: thoracoacromial artery, lateral thoracic artery
Third part: subscapular artery, anterior and posterior humeral circumflex artery
