The Sally B, a B17 Flying Fortress, has a dedicated team and crew that keeps this historic aircraft flying. Let’s meet some of the key members:
Elly Sallingboe (B17 Operator & Chairman of Trustees):
Elly, originally from Denmark, cofounded B17 Preservation Ltd in 1979 with Ted White. Their mission was to operate and raise funds to keep the last remaining B17 in the UK flying as part of the USAAF WW II Memorial Flight.
After Ted’s passing in 1982, Elly took sole control of the B17’s operation, including the ongoing challenge of raising essential funds without official support.
She obtained her Private and Commercial Pilot’s Licenses in 1981 and has dedicated her life to keeping Sally B airborne.
Andrew Dixon (Training Captain):
Andrew joined the team in 1995 and fulfilled his dream of flying Sally B. He started as a First Officer, became a Captain, and eventually took on the role of Training Captain.
His extensive career includes flying DC3s and DC6s for Air Atlantique before transitioning to the B17.
Andrew now serves as the Operations Director of Meridian Aviation in Bournemouth, flying various aircraft worldwide.
Chief Engineer Daryl Taplin:
Daryl and his team of volunteers maintain Sally B.
Experienced professional pilots volunteer their time to fly this iconic aircraft.
