Backpacking Gear Weight-Saving Hacks (Because that Bear Can is HEAVY!)

Follow
Joyful Rambler

My Tahoe Rim Trail thruhike is coming up and I'm grappling with some backpacking gear changes. The TRT requires a bear canister now (it used to be mandatory only in the Desolation Wilderness, now it's the whole Tahoe Basin.)

That bear canister is heavy, so I'm looking for incremental changes that save grams because everything weighs something! If I'm smart, the weight savings will offset the increase in pack weight from the bear can.
