In This Episode Nikhil Narrates the story of Baroda Princely state. The Baroda Princely State, also known as the Vadodara or the Gaekwad State, was a prominent princely state in India during the British Raj. It was located in the western region of presentday Gujarat. The ruling dynasty of the state was the Gaekwads, who were descendants of the Maratha general Pilaji Gaekwad. The Gaekwad dynasty was founded by Pilaji Gaekwad in the late 17th century. Pilaji served as a military general in the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shahu. He distinguished himself in various battles and was granted the control of the territories around Baroda (now Vadodara) as a reward.
Under the rule of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III (18751939), Baroda State witnessed significant expansion and modernization. Sayajirao implemented several reforms, such as free primary education, civil services, and labor laws. He also focused on infrastructure development, building roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, and public libraries. Sayajirao Gaekwad III played an active role in the political scene of British India.
How baroda became part of India?
The last ruler of Baroda, Maharaja Pratapsinhrao Gaekwad, decided to merge his state with the Union of India in 1949. Baroda State became part of the Bombay State, and later, with the reorganisation of states, it became part of Gujarat in 1960.
Today, Vadodara (formerly Baroda) is a major city in Gujarat, known for its rich history, cultural heritage, and educational institutions. The Gaekwad family continues to play a significant role in the social and cultural life of the region.
