Known as the greatest castle never built. The vanity project of Edward I which was started in 1295, was never actually completed! But, still it is an amazing architectural delight to walk around.
It is a Concentric design which in layman's terms means it is a castle within a castle, which if finished would have made it almost impenetrable and one of the greatest strongholds in the UK.
If it had been finished the towers themselves would have been in the region of 11 metres taller than they are now. Even without them being completed it is still the largest of the castles that was designed for Edward I. Who, unfortunately passed away on 1307 and never got to see the 'almost' completed project. As a result of his passing, the urgency to complete the castle dwindled and money was focused elsewhere.
With over 2,000 men having an input into its build and and with it costing the English Treasury in the region of £15,000 (the Treasury capital at the time was only £20,000!) Work on this magnificent stronghold was eventually stopped in 1330.
Even though it was built for defence, there was only one real battle there when Owain Glyndwr revolted and took charge with his men in 1403 a short victory however as the English then recaptured it in 1405.
In the later centuries, it became a focus for artists and travellers who often stopped by to view and tour the structure and Queen Victoria visited it in the 1835.
Today the castle, although not as popular as others such as Caernarfon, still attracts in the region of 75,000 visitors a year and still a great place to take the family for a day.
