BEAUTIFUL Backpacking Roaring Plains West Virginia!

We sure do have some views for you! The Roaring Plains Wilderness is a federally owned wilderness area that is adjacent to Dolly Sods Wilderness in West Virginia. Despite being neighbors with one of the most popular trail systems in West Virginia, Roaring Plains manages to stay fairly unknown to the general public.

The loop we did started with a steep climb of about 1,200 feet over the course of the first two miles. At the start, you're down below 3,000 feet and the trail is mostly dense WV forest. There are some impressive water features and birch groves along the way to spice things up.

Atop the Roaring Plains is where the magic happens. There are many beautiful mountaintop meadows on top of balds that characterize the Monongahela National Forest experience. In the spots where the forest opens up, there are mountains as far as the eye can see! At one notable point the trail opens up into a pipeline cut that makes for a movie quality shot.

Canyon Rim Trail was the highlight of the trip. This is the trail we ended up camping on with beautiful views out over the canyon! We ended up following the Canyon Rim Trail to its end and used a connector trail that is an unofficial trail.

I cannot stress this enough, bring a GPS! This is federal wilderness area, there aren't even blazes allowed on the trees. Trail marker posts aren't allowed either. Combine this with dense, overgrown trails, massive rock fields and general desolation and you have a recipe for getting lost!

Sara and I both brought some new ultralight gear on this trip. These are mostly small items from Hilltop Packs, but Sara also ended up with a NICE new piece of gear, I won't give it away in the description though! We also tried our own dehydrated backpacking meals for the first time! I'm looking forward to doing more food dehydrating the future and see what sort of tasty meals we can come up with. I'm looking forward to saving a ton of money on buying freeze dried meals so I can blow it on gear instead haha.
