The best slot canyons in Arizona? Exploring the slot canyons of the Turkey Creek drainage just south of Aravaipa Canyon. Turkey Creek and Oak Grove have about ten canyons of varying slotyness carved out of the sandstone and loose aggregate before flowing down to Aravaipa Creek near the east trailhead for the Aravaipa Wilderness Area. The canyons can be accessed from the top (south) via Four mile Road west of Klondyke, Arizona. Alternately, the northern portion can be accessed from the road to the east trailhead of Aravaipa Canyon. Once you pass the trailhead, the road takes a 90 degree left after crossing a stream and heads up Turkey Creek, providing access to the lower slot canyons and also the Rug Road, if you are the extreme 4wd type. 4wd and high clearance is required for either option! These two roads do not connect, so you would need to go in both ways to see all the canyons pictured.

Since Aravaipa Canyon permits are only available for 3 days max, Turkey Creek and Oak Grove offer a great opportunity to occupy you for the rest of your time if you are planning a week long adventure. You won't regret it. Unless you go when it's raining, in which case you will probably drown! Don't laugh, it happened to someone a week after we were there.

Never go in a slot canyon if it is raining, or if there is a chance of rain!
