What is the best intraocular (IOL) lens to use for cataract surgery? It actually depends on the individual as no single lens is best for everyone. When the natural lens of the eye becomes clouded from cataracts, surgery is performed in order to remove the clouded lens. During cataract surgery, the natural lens is replaced with an artificial one to provide clear vision and improve color contrast. Vision correction can also be accomplished through the use of such an intraocular lens or IOL implant.
Cataract surgery animation is shown briefly followed by a GENERAL explanation of the 4 main types of lens implants used in cataract surgery along with their pros and cons: monofocal, multifocal, extended depth of focus (EDOF), and toric.
Accommodating lens implant is not discussed as part of this video's discussion on cataract surgery lens choice as this IOL implant has gone out of favor; EDOF implants are utilized instead.
