The first and most important step before you contour is knowing your skin's undertones. So are you warm (olive, yellow undertone), cool (pink/beige undertone), or neutral? The easiest way is to look at your veins on your wrist. If your veins appear green then you are warm in undertone. If they are blue then cool. If you have a mix of both blue & green then neutral. Based on that you can determine your contour shade. Cool undertones or fair skin tones do best with ashy, gray, cool contours. Warm undertones can use warmer powders like a matte bronzer without it looking muddy or too orange. Neutral undertones can use either or a more neutral shade of contour. Dark skin tones usually work best with deeper chocolate shades that have a red undertone like the one in the Ulta Contour Kit. And in terms of depth, for the most natural contour, you want to pick a color that is 12 shades darker than your skin tone/base foundation. I personally lean more neutral to yellow but my natural skin tone is also fairly light so I find that I can use either warm or cool but prefer cool tones for contouring my nose. Hope that helps.
