BETA BLOCKERS Pharmacology Review for Nurses & Nursing Students provides an INDEPTH video that covers the pathophysiology of betablockers and beta 1, beta 2, and beta 3 receptors.

We also review a fun mnemonic (BETA MADE) that puts everything together and makes it EASY for you to know the adverse effects, nursing implications, and patient teaching points.

BetaBlockers (betaadrenergic blocking agents) block the release of Epinephrine and Norepinephrine (stress hormones) in parts of the body.

This medication classification is used to treat drug high blood pressure, angina pectoris, arrhythmias, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, heart failure, and stage fright (anxiety).

There are two different types of betablockers: 1. Nonselective and 2. Selective.

✔A nonselective betablocker will have an antagonist effect on any of the betareceptor sites which include the heart, bronchioles in the lungs, kidneys, bladder, liver, arteries
✔A selective betablocker is cardiacselective so they work in the beta1 receptors sites located in the HEART (cardiac node cells) and Juxtaglomerular cells of the kidneys (regulate renin release which has an effect of blood pressure).
