https://www.HeartValveSurgery.com One of the big challenges with bicuspid aortic valves and aortic aneurysms is timing surgery of these lifethreatening diseases. For that reason, we receive many patient questions about the diagnostic tests that determine the progression and severity of bicuspid aortic valves and aortic aneurysms.

For example, we just received a question from Brad, a patient, who asked, “I have been unexpectedly diagnosed with a bicuspid aortic valve and an aneurysm. My doctor told me I will probably need surgery in the next few years but was vague about when that would be. As you might imagine, I’m a little stressed out and worrying about the future. Are there any specific test results that will tell me when I should have surgery?”

To answer Brad's question, we interviewed Dr. Ibrahim Sultan, who is the Chief of the Division of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Sultan has performed over 1,500 cardiac surgeries during his extraordinary career.

In this video, Dr. Sultan addresses the different, diagnostic tests that help cardiologists and cardiac surgeons determine the best time for surgery including echocardiograms, CAT scans (CT scans), and transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE). In addition, Dr. Sultan addresses the different types of treatment options available for patients including aortic valve replacement, root replacement using a Dacron graft, aortic valve repair, and valvesparing aortic root replacement.
