Big Model Trains Take Over My House For A Day

Follow
Jim Zim

It took me two days to set up this massive model train layout throughout my house and garage! It was worth the trouble, though... because this was a very cool layout featuring eight different Gscale model trains running at the same time, plus quite a few other model trains sitting on sidings.

The eight model trains that were running in this video were:
White Pass Steam Train by Piko
ATSF Steam Train (a.k.a. The Valvoline Train) by Bachmann
White Pass Diesel Train by LGB
North Pole Express by Piko
BNSF Freight Train by MTH Trains
Porter Steam Train by LGB
Santa Fe Super Chief by LGB
Rhaetian Railway Steam Train by LGB

A common question I get is "what did this train set cost?"
The answer is that this was not something that I bought as a complete set. What you're looking at in this video is a collection of individual model train items that I purchased individually over a period of years.

Another common question is "where can I buy a set like this?"
I purchased most of these items from www.trainworld.com They seem to have the best combination of low prices and large selection. However, be aware that Gscale model trains like this are extremely expensive. The model train equipment you see in this video cost me in excess of $15,000 USD. This amount of track is also a considerable expense, as it sells for $7 per foot of track.

This video was shot using two different GoPro cameras. I especially like Gscale trains because they are large enough and stable enough to run with a GoPro mounted on the train. You would never be able to get a video like this using the more popular HO scale of model trains, as they are too small to handle a Go Pro. The opening shot of this video was the only shot not done with a GoPro... it was shot with my cell phone.

The sound of the model trains makes this video even more fun. For the best experience, listen with a pair of headphones.

If you've seen some of my model train videos from years past, you'll notice that this one was shot in a much nicer house. This is our Washington house, which we purchased in 2020. My model train videos prior to September of 2020 were shot in our previous (smaller and older) home in California.
