This video tells the history of the biggest British airport outside of London: Manchester Airport. From its wartime use as a parachute training school, the airport quickly became the most important in the north of England when the package holiday boom exploded in the 1960s and 70s. As the airport grew to meet demand and cement itself as an economic powerhouse for the whole of the region, its story became littered with so much history. Villages were flattened to make way for new terminals, and a second runway faced fierce opposition from local and national environmental activists that made headline news. And there were several tragedies over the years too, including the Stockport Air Disaster in 1967, and a fire in 1985 on a British Airtours flight that became one of the worst air disasters in British history.
