Pushyamitra Shunga (ruled c. 185 – c. 149 BCE) was the founder of the Shunga dynasty which he established by rebelling against Maurya Empire.
Pushyamitra is recorded to have performed numerous (at least twice) Ashvamedha Yajna to legitimize his right to rule.
The Buddhist texts claim that Pushyamitra persecuted the Buddhists, scholars have expressed skepticism about these claims.
