Black Assembly and Unemployment Criminalized

On November 24, 1865, the Mississippi legislature approved a code that criminalized unemployment and assembly by freed black people. Known as "Black Codes", laws like this were passed in an attempt to control and confine newly freed slaves. As a result of Black Codes and similar laws in the South, many more American black people entered the court and prison systems than ever before.
